“WHERE the mind is without fear and the head is held high;

Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;

Where words come out from the depth of truth;

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;

Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action ⎯

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.”

ECHER is the 5 Pillars of Development that MIU pivots around in the pursuit of transformation of the People, Place and Society

Environment Protection & Development

Balancing environmental protection and development is a critical global challenge. Sustainable development, guided by thoughtful regulation, environmental impact assessments, and conservation efforts, is key to achieving economic growth while safeguarding the planet’s ecosystems and future generations. This equilibrium necessitates the adoption of renewable energy, green infrastructure, and innovative technologies, along with corporate responsibility and international collaboration. In a world increasingly impacted by climate change, adaptation strategies and green finance are vital components of this dynamic equation, ensuring both a healthy environment and a thriving society.

Cultural Preservation & Development

Cultural preservation and development are essential for maintaining the identity, heritage, and diversity of societies. While development brings progress and change, it’s crucial to safeguard cultural traditions, languages, art, and historical sites. This can be achieved through educational programs, museums, cultural institutions, and policies that support the protection and promotion of cultural heritage. Balancing development with cultural preservation fosters a richer and more inclusive society that honors its past while advancing into the future.

Human Resource and Education

Human resource development and education are integral components of societal progress and economic growth. Education equips individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to contribute effectively to the workforce and society as a whole. Quality education systems, including schools, colleges, and vocational training, are critical for nurturing a skilled and adaptable workforce. Human resource development initiatives, both within organizations and at the national level, play a pivotal role in enhancing employee performance and productivity. Together, these elements contribute to a more prosperous and innovative society by cultivating talent, fostering lifelong learning, and driving economic development.

Economic & Infrastructural Development

Economic development and infrastructural development go hand in hand in building prosperous and resilient societies. Robust infrastructure, including transportation networks, energy systems, and digital connectivity, serves as the backbone for economic growth. Investment in infrastructure not only creates jobs but also enhances productivity and facilitates the movement of goods and services, ultimately driving economic expansion. Conversely, a strong and diversified economy generates the resources needed to invest in and maintain infrastructure, creating a positive feedback loop that fosters sustained development and improved living standards.

Rural & Tribal Development

Rural and tribal development initiatives are crucial for achieving equitable and inclusive growth in societies. Rural areas, often inhabited by tribal communities, face unique challenges such as limited access to basic services, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. Focusing on rural and tribal development involves strategies like infrastructure improvement, healthcare and education access, sustainable agriculture, and livelihood diversification. Empowering these communities with skills and resources not only enhances their quality of life but also preserves their cultural heritage. Promoting rural and tribal development fosters social inclusion and helps bridge the urban-rural divide, ultimately contributing to the overall well-being and socio-economic progress of the nation.

Message from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

I am pleased to convey my congratulations to you all on the inauguration of Manipur International University.

Your University will fulfil an important need not just in Manipur but also throughout the northeast region of India and beyond. Higher education provides the key to opportunities for realising our own welfare. More importantly, it can help develop the ability of an individual to serve our community, our nation, and above all, our family of humanity.

In this twenty first century, the quality of research into both the inner and physical world has reached a very high level, thanks to tremendous strides in technology. However, the world is also facing problems, many of which are of our own making. Destructive emotions such as greed, hatred, and jealousy, which I believe are the root of the self-inflicted problems our society faces. Regrettably, modern education, oriented as it is towards training us to attain material goals, has little to offer to help us counter these mental problems. I believe that just as we teach physical hygiene, we must cultivate emotional hygiene, as we need to be both physically and mentally fit by familiarising with the positive aspects like warm-heartedness compassion and tolerance.

Therefore, as your University begins imparting education, I feel you can incorporate teachings from India’s own ancient wisdom, including its practices for cultivating a calm abiding mind (shamatha) and the wisdom of special insight (vipasana) in order to generate a deep understanding of the workings of the mind. Ancient Indian knowledge encouraged compassion (karuna) and non-violence (ahimsa). I believe these to be not only the basis of India’s remarkable religious pluralism, with many religious traditions living together harmoniously, but also needed for the community development. We must teach about the importance of safeguarding our planet, our only home. Students should learn to cultivate compassion not only for our fellow human beings, but also for other living beings with whom we share this precious home.

I hope that Manipur International University will continuously aim to train younger generations to develop the tools and abilities to serve others and benefit the whole of humanity. A11 major faith traditions counsel love, compassion, and forgiveness. Each of the religions of the world has the potential to foster peace of mind, which is why I respect them all and seek to encourage religious harmony. Despite differences in our philosophical views, we can all help each other by being more warm-hearted and compassionate, and deepening our sense of concern for the well-being of all forms of life. We must help others whenever we can, and should, at the very least, refrain from harming them.

I am also pleased to learn that the University proposes to have a Centre for Tibetan Medicine & Astrology. This alternative medicine system will certainly enable the Students and the community alike to appreciate the importance of a holistic approach to treatment.

With my prayers and good wishes, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
